What can you do with a stock pot?
- Make cheese.
- Make soup.
- Can (boiling water bath method).
- Make large batches of Salsa, spaghetti sauce, raspberry syrup or other foods to be canned.
- Make bone broth.
I have 2 large 30 quart stock pots. I love them. They are stainless steel so as to protect from any reaction to the metal when making cheese. I bought my 1st stock pot about 7 years ago and my second about 4 years ago. I used my 1st so much that I needed a second. My picture is not of a shinny new stock pot it is on my well used stock pot. The bottom is stained from the propane fire it is often cooked on, but it still keeps on giving me hours of use each day.
I bought the 1st one when I started making cheese, the second one was to allow me to make a larger amount of cheese at the same time since it takes all day to make cheddar cheese and having a second pot allowed me to double the output without doubling the time and effort.
So when I had a stock pot I began using it for canning. the 30 quart pot holds 8 quart jars or 14 pints for a boiling water bath. I was able to fit more in the pot for processing. Having the second pot allowed me to mix in one and process in the other. When you can as much as we do you meed to make as large a batch as possible. The following is a list of the things we usually make and can every year.
- bone broth
- chicken vegetable soup
- veggie beef soup
- tomato sauce
- spaghetti sauce
- steak sauce
- tomato juice
- raspberry syrup
- jam (raspberry, strawberry, plum, apple pie, caramel apple)
- apple pie filling
- dried beans
- green tomato salsa
in addition to these we try new things each year. I will eventually share all my recipes with you as I have time to post them I will link them to this article.
A quality stock pot should be stainless steel like this one. My stock pots are 30 quart. I can make cheese from 12 gal of milk at a time. which makes about 12 lbs of cheese. I never knew how much I needed a stock pot until I bought one and now I use it every day during the canning season, as well many times throughout the year.
