Basic Gardening. This will be a facebook live class May 31 10 am. Follow us on facebook for more information. The video will be shared in a post following the class.
We will show you the herbs that are ready for harvest at this time. Come learn what they look like and how to harvest. Mullen, Oregon grape, yarrow, shave grass, and many others. I was hoping to show you some of the flowering tree herbs but the blossoms froze this spring. This class will last about an hour. Please meet at The Red Barn Farm at 4500 East Maple creek road. Preserving Berries and other spring foods. June 24th.
We will be making strawberry jam and talking about other spring foods that can be preserved.
Summer herb walk, recognition and harvesting. Late August
Come learn about herbs that grow in the wild. We will show you what they look like and teach about what to use them for and how to prepare them for use. The herbs I plan to share with you are mullein, shave grass, yarrow, hawthorn, chokecherry, and plantain, elderberry, wormwood, and Oregon grape. Come prepared to take a short walk to see the herbs where they grow.
Honey Processing. September
We will show how to take honey from the frame to the Jar. We will also talk about our experience in keeping bees. We extract the honey, strain and bottle it.This class will be held in my home at 4017 S 4650 E, Franklin Id. If you need help finding it please call 208-646-2578 for directions.
Basic Soap Making. October
We will be teaching how to make a basic bar of soap. This will include instructions and recipes for bar soap for personal use and also a laundry bar.
How to Make and Can Bone Broth for Health. November
We will show you how to make and can bone broth. I will have both beef and chicken broth to see. We will also talk about the health benefits it provides for us.
Other classes we teach.
All about milk.
This class will start with us showing you our milking equipment and how we milk our cow. Then we will be skimming the cream off the milk and making butter and sour cream, and also making cheddar cheese and cream cheese, and ice cream. This will be an all day class.
Come learn about fermented foods, We will talk about their benefits and how to make some of them. We’ll talk about several fermented foods like sour kraut, apple cider vinegar, and yogurt, raw cheese, and pickles, and will teach how to make sauerkraut and apple cider vinegar.
All About Yarrow
We will show you what it looks like growing in the wild. How to harvest and dry it for use. How to use it and what to use it for. We will include instructions on making tinctures, salves, teas and soaked oils with this herb.
Basic Preservation Methods, Water Bath Canning, Pressure Canning, Drying Fruits and Vegetables, Salt Preservation of green Bean.
This will be hands on so you can experience each method of preservation. We will start with the salt preservation using green beans. This method allows you to preserve the beans, shelf stable without refrigeration. No canning or drying.
We will be drying peaches and plums, and also making raspberry jam and plum jelly.
We will go on to the basic water bath canning and pressure canning. I will show you the equipment that I love to use when preserving foods.
harvesting from the wild. I will show you what elderberries look like, where to find them and how to process them. Will talk about huckleberries, wild plums, chokecherries. and other wild foods that are plentiful in our area.
How to make a cellar to store apples and root vegetables like carrots, beets, and potatoes.
